So the blog post I was fully intending to post today was going to be a review of all the books I’ve been loving over the course of the summer and last few months in general. I’ve been reading a LOT and I’d gone so far as to write notes on a few I’ve absolutely loved so I could throw it all together seamlessly into one truly fabulous blog post.
Is anyone ahead of me here?! Yep, you guessed it, I searched for the notes I made and I genuinely do not know where the hell they are, what I saved them under or even if I had them on the laptop in the first place and may have just done old school note taking in one of my many many (admittedly gorgeous) notepads.
So, with that in mind, we’ll just have to save that for another day, it’ll be one to look forward to when it finally emerges from the depths of God knows where. So I thought I’d do a favourites list instead. Things I have been loving over the last who-knows-how-long-its-been-since-I-did-a-favourites-blog. (Just checked, it was June! Have a peek if you missed it!)
So, in mourning of my lost list but fully going with the new topic, let’s kick this list off with -
Books! I like nothing better than to have a good read, I’ve been very lucky to have the time to do this over the summer and have definitely fulfilled my New Years resolution of reading more. Some I’ve loved, some I’ve got to the last page and been immensely disappointed by, some I’ve cried through, laughed through, and had to pretend I had something in my eye when they’ve hit a nerve that makes you go “wow.” If I had to choose a specific genre of book that I enjoy, it would be a tricky one. Is there such a genre as “an absolute page turner that keeps you wanting more, is long enough not to be devoured in one sitting, you’d definitely want to read again in the not too distant future and really just makes you wish that you’d written it yourself” ?? Thought not, but if there was, that would be it. Blog coming soon with the full list of favourites, I promise.
Podcasts If I’m not involved in a book, I’ll have one of these on. Either when I’m in the car or just pottering round the house (it definitely helps that I’ve finally figured out how my SONOS system works so I can listen wherever I am in the house - genius invention.) I do love a podcast and high on my list of “recently listened to” include “The High Low” with journalists Pandora Sykes and the utterly brilliant Dolly Alderton, who in my book can do no wrong, I love her take on life, her writing and her thoughts on things high and low-brow in this podcast. Definitely worth a listen, plus I’ve found so many great recommendations of books, music, podcast, articles, the list is endless, I urge you to have a listen!
Another one high on my list of favourite podcasts of the moment is “Help I Sexted My Boss.” Now, I can assure you I don’t have weird taste in slightly saucy podcast subject matter - this is presented by Radio 1 DJ Jordan North and Etiquette expert William Hanson, who make a highly unlikely partnership but it just works so well and has me laughing my head off - usually at the most inopportune moments. With topics such as “Help, I’m off to Benidorm” “Help I hate my flatmate” and this weeks “Help I’m a Netflix cheat” it breaks down the “correct” way to deal with the things life throws at you. I also particularly like the fact they do it whilst having a tipple of Gin and Dubonnet, a combination I’d never heard of but now really want to try!
Finally, an old favourite, but one that definitely won’t be off my list for a very long time to come is BBC Radio 2’s “Confessions with Simon Mayo”. I love listening to these declarations of wrong-doing and have been a long time fan of the many misdemeanours that people are happy to have broadcast on national radio!
Dark Hair Ok, this is a bit of an odd one but basically I am a serial hair changer. I have been blonde most of my adult life and have tried - repeatedly - to attain my “goal” of the perfect ashy blonde hue. Problem is, my hair does not like the ashy blonde hue and it just doesn’t work. So, I attempted dark hair for a while last year and loved it. Then I started going blonde again earlier this year and the pattern just began once more. (There’s definitely a pattern here…!) I’m sure my amazing hairdresser needs a new filing cabinet with the many colours we’ve tried and the ridiculous amount of cards she’s filled in with colour codes and combinations over and over again. (Sorry Danielle!) Over the summer, I have been toying with the idea of changing my hair yet again and last week I finally took the plunge and did it properly. From fairly bright blonde to brunette. Hell, I even went the whole hog and had a fringe cut in too. And I absolutely blimmin’ love it. I do however keep spotting myself in the mirror and having to do a double take thinking there’s an intruder in the house and I’ve confused more than a few friends this week who haven’t the faintest idea who I am. It’s fun being a part of the dark side again!
Nice Smells Sharing a home with two boys, one big, one little and a four legged friend, the place can sometimes not smell as nice as I would want it. (This is a massive understatement.) Most of my favourites lists have included perfume or candles, something that appeals to my obsession with nice smells. Then I discovered this little beauty. Fill it with water, drop some essential oil in, switch it on and you’re sorted. And the house smells of anything from clean linen, pear, baby powder, seaspray, elderflower, lily of the valley or coffee. Yes, I bought a few……. A girls got to have some choices now…!
Gorgeous pink gin of dreams So I had the need to go and buy some gin glasses the other day seeing as my lovely husband had smashed one, but lets not go into that. So off I popped to John Lewis, picked up some glasses and what do you know, some clever marketing person had created the display of dreams featuring gin glasses, gin accessories (who knew these were even a thing) and of course the all important GIN! I spotted this one and let’s just say, I must be a marketing dream as it somehow leapt into my basket and is now fully at home in my drinks cupboard. I discovered pink gin over the summer and it’s sure to be a favourite for me for a very long time. Even better I just discovered that Fever Tree do light ginger beer to match with the rhubarb flavours so it’s a win win. Or gin gin if you prefer……
Jigsaw puzzles Well, stick a crocheted blanket over my knees and call me Ethel, I am not afraid to admit I have a new found love for a jigsaw. My inner old lady found a jigsaw with all kinds of coffee on it whilst on her gin run in John Lewis so I obviously had to have it. Now I haven’t done a jigsaw on my own since I was about ten when my parents bought me one with about a hundred porcelain dolls on. Needless to say, it was absolutely terrifying and I must admit it put me off jigsaws for the next thirty years. (I have the same problem with china dolls as some people have with clowns - hideous.) But anyway, I settled down on Sunday to start this jigsaw and by Monday evening it was complete, I admit I got a bit obsessed with it and Could. Not. Stop. My plan is to frame it and pop it up in the kitchen so I can admire my handiwork on a daily basis, possibly, no, definitely whilst sipping coffee. Next up on my hitlist and expected any day (who am I kidding, Amazon Prime all the way) is this bad boy. Someone calm this inner old lady of mine down with a gin.
So there you have it! Yes, they are once again fairly random, probably most of them aren’t particularly cool, but hey, I do like to keep it real on this blog. What have you guys been loving recently? Let me know any of your favourites or anything you’d like to see me include another time!
